Engineers use patents to find out what has already been designed in the field and make sure they are not designing the exact same thing. You can also use patents to find new and exciting ideas or concepts.
- Journal: A scholarly publication containing articles written by researchers and other experts. Journals can be used to get technical information or information about cutting edge scholarly research. They can also help an engineer understand what is happening in a field.
- Codes: According to the American Society for Mechanical Engineers "A standard is a code when it has been adopted by one or more governmental bodies and is enforceable by law, or when it has been incorporated into business contract." Codes are required by law. Like standards, codes help to increase safety of people, structures and infrastructure. In Canada, there are codes for building, fire, plumbing, electrical and highway bridges.

- Market: Market research can help you find information about potential customers or users. Market reports can help you find out customer data, including demographics, psychographics, and behaviours on consumer or business markets.
- Standard: According to the American Society for Mechanical Engineers “A standard can be defined as a set of technical definitions and guidelines that function as instructions for designers, manufacturers, operators, or users of equipment." Designing using standards, increases safety and quality of products which in turn increases customer satisfaction. It allow for interoperability of parts which lead to improved profit margins.
- Recall: When someone else requests a book that you have borrowed from the library. When this happens, you will not be able to renew the book. After you have had it for two weeks, we will notify you by email that you have 48 hours to return the book.
- Guide: The library has various research guides, containing recommended databases and other research tips to help you get started on your research!
- Serial: An item that is published in a series, such as academic journals. Often serials, periodicals, and journals are used interchangeably! You can find serials upstairs in the "quiet study area" zone.
- Keyword: Word or short phrase that represents the main ideas in your research question or topic. These are the words you enter into the search box to find information sources related to your topic.
- Citation: A reference to an information source, usually done in a particular citation style (e.g. IEEE). Scholarly writing uses citations to give credit to others' ideas and thoughts and demonstrate the scholarly conversation you're participating in.
- Database: Library databases help you search for articles more efficiently. Most specialize in a specific subject and have special features that let you find the best sources faster.
- Renewal: To extend the loan period on your item, you can renew your book. Learn more about our renewal policies, including automatic and temporary unlimited renewals!
- Trade: Trade publications or trade journals/magazines are usually published by trade or professional associations. These information sources report news, trends, or information that is of interest to specific industries or professions.
- Exhibit: The library has digital exhibits that highlight the history of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, including one about the Sanford Fleming Fire, U of T Engineering Buildings, and the history of Skule Nite.
